Simple Rules & Abbreviations Of Instant Messaging

Posted on 13 Mar, 2009 by Scott under Internet

Today, many people are using the Internet to meet new people. Tools such as chat rooms, email, and instant messaging are becoming the norm in keeping up communication with a new partner. However, there are some rules that apply when using the computer and not knowing these rules can leave you at a great disadvantage. Instant messaging allows you to chat in real time, unlike email. Without instant messaging (IM), many people would feel lost on their computer, if not socially.

IM is a simple way to get in touch with someone without calling him or her on the phone. Whether you are chatting through an instant messaging program or an online chat room, you should know what certain symbol or abbreviations mean, as well as feel comfortable speaking the new online language. Here is a list of various terms and abbreviations commonly associated with instant messaging programs.

Always read the TOS (Terms of Service)
Each instant messaging program will specify its own terms of service for using the program. Be sure to read these before you install and use the messenger service.

Type quickly and efficiently
First; you should realize that instant messaging programs limit the amount of text you can type. You don’t need to write novels, just simply answer and reply to questions.

Begin each session with Hello and a brief introduction
Asking if it is a good time to chat is recommended. Some people may not have the time to chat and may have neglected to put up an away or busy message.

Don’t’ be too strict with grammar and spelling
Although you don’t want your posts to be full of grammatical errors, instant messaging is in real time, therefore speed is more important than a few typos.

Don’t be upset if the other person doesn’t have time to chat
Not everyone has time to chat. Never take it personally if someone doesn’t respond to your instant messaging sessions. Always ask if they have time to chat beforehand. If you are chatting and they suddenly disappear, don’t take it personally. They may be having computer issues or may have needed to restart their program.

Never take offense at quick responses
What may seem rude in face-to-face conversation is not necessarily rudeness when chatting online. Quick responses help keep the chat session flowing and aren’t an indication of disrespect.

Always adjust your Instant Messaging Status
Use the preset status messages or create your own, but always let your buddies no if you are busy, away from your computer, or available to chat.

Always respect other users Instant Messaging status
If another user has their instant messaging set to “Do Not Disturb” respect their wishes and don’t send them instant messages until they change their status settings.

Here is a listing of standard Instant Messaging abbreviations:

I like how you actually used relevant acronyms. I love reading when general news sites try and cover the “Internet Speak” and they refer to the most obscure acronyms that I’ve never heard ANYONE use before. It’s good to have someone who actually knows something produce a list.

I think you should add FTW though as that one confused me for a long time!

IM etiquette….some of the messages I receive take quite a bit of decoding, as people tend to make it up as they go along. ROFLMAO is my personal favourite…..bwahahahahahaaaaaa
