Some of your complaints are valid, but you know what – I’ve found feature lists like this end up ignoring the elephant in the room. That elephant is usability.

Now before you label me as an Apple fanboy, let me say I’ve owned several very expensive Symbian and Windows Mobile PDA smartphones, one of the latter with a 3.5” touch screen, wifi and slide-out keyboard and I’ve spent hundreds of dollars buying software (GPS turn-by-turn s/w, theol library package, SPB utilities, dozens of ebooks, etc) and you know what – I eventually ended up totally frustrated and gave up on it all and am now waiting for the iPhone 3G.

Why? Because WinMo and Symbian simply suck and stacking up feature on feature without integrating it all with a finger-friendly, powerful graphical user interface means most people just give up trying to use these features and those that do try and get into it (like me) so often eventually grow weary of trying to push manure up a hill. And I’m afraid tacked GUI layers like Touch-Flo is like lipstick on a pig. Scratch below the surface menus and it’s still a pig underneath.

Also, many of your complaints are actually not the issues you make them out to be:

The full-screen virtual keyboard on my iPod Touch once I got used to it is far faster to use and far more flexible than the slide-out thumb keyboard on my big HTC WinMo PDA phone. Being able to change context such as display .com as a key when in the web browser or show other languages (even draw Chinese characters with your finger – hello Hindi or Tamil or whatever etc) in an instant is so much more powerful than a rigid chromed plastic keyboard that dies after 6 months of abuse in a pocket.

Not having the stupid battery pop off and reset your phone every time you drop it is a God-send and if you need more battery life, there are several clip on battery packs from Belkin and others that are designed for the iPhone.

No MMS? Well, it is a lot cheaper and more flexible to use the full HTML email capabilities instead.

Haptic fedback is possible – some 3rd party apps already provide such feedback.

FM radio? There are many more online streaming radio stations and 60,000 free video and audio podcasts on iTunes alone to keep anyone happy.

Video recording? 3rd party software is already available to enable that feature.

Bluetooth filesharing? Why use that when you have the far faster wifi and 3G built-in and 3rd party software available.

Copy and Paste? I agree that is a lack and hopefully Apple or 3rd party software will fix that.

No tethering (wireless modem). Yes, I agree that is a shame that is not yet available. However, considering the fantastic web browsing experience and excellent email capabilities of the iPhone, it is not nearly as necessary as with old phones with tiny crappy displays.

Java? I don’t want to run any crappy Java games on my phone. The iPhone does however provide far better support for full Web 2.0 apps using Ajax and Javascript.

2megapixel camera? Yeah, it would have been better if there were a few more megapixels, but come on, 2 megapixels is 1900 x 1200 resolution which is far higher than VGA (640×480) and far from useless.

AD2P gives pretty poor audio quality thanks to the extreme compression over Bluetooth and means yet more batteries to have to keep charged.

Of course you neglect to mention the positive advantages of the iPhone that have made it the number one mobile web device in the world beating all WinMo, Symbian and other devices put together despite only being available in a handful of countries for only just on one year. Having half a gigabyte of rock solid unix-based, OS X, a 600MHz CPU, graphics accelerator, GPS, accelerometers, huge multi-touch screen, and so much onboard storage and the most advanced user interface of any phone on the planet and an amazingly accessible App Store which will keep all the malware out all add up to much greater than the sum of the feature list.

Anyway, that’s just my thoughts on the subject. Have fun.

You are an idiot. The phones in India are locked to carriers as well. Unlocked phones are available, but at full price. It is the same everywhere. India is not a special market. Learn to write well, using proper caps and paragraphs, not like a 13 year old texting “4 lols.” And, make intelligent points in your post. Ranting endlessly is pointless.

And yet in India we pay huge sums to get admission to some useless college, pay bribes or speed money or whatever to get things done, that should be done anyway.

So yes mobile services are cheap, but many other things are much more expensive.

Its your money, spend it the way you like. If you can afford the data rates and need those services, I encourage you to get the phone that serves you best, whether its the iPhone or not. After all your paying the higher rates is what is going to pay for the 3G infrastructure the rest of us want. So don’t discourage the iPhone user, encourage them, since they will fund the next generation of telco services the rest of us need and want!

If you want somebody to pay attention to your rants, please check your Spelling and Grammar before you publish on the internet.

Well, maybe this iPhone is not the right choice. It is funny how far we have come in technology though, seeing these little things that are payed attention to so much. A few years ago not even half of these things mentioned in the post existed!

I have been using iphone for the past 10 months including 4 months in India and Love it. I got almost all the features in this iphone, as someone mentioned you can make up whatever you want But iphone is one of best experience you will have.
You can review any product but its upto to the Individual to Buy or not to buy

I would like to add one more point to the discussion that 3G guidelines have already been designed by TRAI(Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) and on 22nd July the bill will be presented in Lok sabha and there are only bleak chances that it wont be passed, and this is the very reason Airtel and Vodafone have delayed the release, also the pre-registration is to support them when they try and push it further. And I don’t understand one thing that why people like Narendra act like the fox who could not reach the grapes and later called them sour without even eating the fruit! iPhone is NOT symbian which is atleast 15-20yr old, NOT windows based which is again more then 5-yr old, Its a first generation phone, so you can imagine the immense potential of the product which has grown in huge leaps to beat leaders in a span of 1year and 7days to be precise! Personally the only that bothers me is the contract part and I am gonna escape it by unlocking it, and please don’t even mention the fact that as of now the 2G 2.0 firmware and 3G are unlockable but soon they will be. And yes as someone rightly said, either you buy it or just ignore it, dont try to impose your opinions on it. And think for once, you will be carrying a phone with a lousy browser and iPod, always thinking that you might drop any of those while I will be sailing smoothly on the fastest internet speed, and listening to my favourite music at the same time from just one thing!!

Plus one more thing, if iPhone is just so bad then why your favorite mobile phone manufacturers are trying their best to make a copy of it and failing miserably! Be it HTC or Sony erricsson with XPERIA. What? They had a touch screen thing already? well, ever tried typing a long hate message to your girlfriend, its a pain, trust me! What? ooh, you are fine pressing 4433555555666 to type ‘hello’ or using t9,hmmmm, and of course a full display keyboard on the screen with touch feature and an intelligent dictionary is not good you(iphone ),mmm well, choice is yours.

I not really an iPhone fanatic and I don’t like the way it looked. I prefer to have cellphone and an mp3 player. In that way, I wont use too much battery life and it could make the device last longer.

@Tarun: Even if the bill is passed by then, it would take some time for the 3G services to be functional in India as it involves lot of factors like feasibility study, setup costs and so on..

@all: Agreed , Apple has revolutionized the touch phone thingi nonetheless. But let us focus here on which phone is the best of the lot (at least close to). After all, we should put our money on the best available option isnt it?

Martin did try to patch up on some of Narendra’s Iphone issues. However some like ‘No msg forwardin’ , FM radio absence, poor MP cam, video capturin are some serious concerns that need to be addressed immediately by APPLE. Its the only phone with a VPN connectivity that is a boon for professional users.

Narendra was right about the data plans section coz many of my pals in the US are running ridiculously high bills every month. I dont know what kind of model Airtel and Vodafone are gonna come up in India.

The HTC touch pro looks to me as a phone that has tried to fill in the Iphone voids by addressing all the concerns.You name all features, u got em all. No contract, available in both GSM and CDMA
Only problem, its touch flo interface technology is not as fast as that of Iphone ( at least that is the case with htc touch diamond, not too sure bout touch pro as it is yet to be released this August) .You may want to youtube the video for it.Gotta agree with Martin on this one as touch-flo ( in the diamond) is a lipstick on a pig.

Man, i just came across this blog somehow.. I am more confused now. iPhone was the only phone that I wanted to buy after my curretn V3i. I dont find phones worth buying even after shelling out 10K. I had some of these points in my mind… but now I am trying to find a fully package phone other than iPhone.. Any suggestions folks? like n81 is a good deal, but the sliding factor is not what i want.

If the phone does not work as a modem to access internet from computer, then it is a big drawback.

I dont think anybody wants to take internet connectio to iPhone eventhough you cannot use the phone as modem!

Currenlty AirTel on slow GPRS/Edge charges 400/- per 100MB. So having broadband seperately for computer and also pay 400/- for a 100MB dat plan does not make sense.

This alone is a major turnoff.

AirTel and Hutch in India have clarified that they will not tie the iPhone to any call-schem but would sell separately and the price is estimated(not a wild guess) to be beyond 25000/-Rs.

With all these short comings spending 25000 on this one does not make sense.

THere are clear comparisons between PDAs and iPhone.
iPhone is not a PDA period.

The main factor in India would be the cost of the phone.
If 4GB version which is 8000/- in the US with data plan comes for about 12000/- in india, then it will be a hit.

prices above 25000/- will be a turn off as there are drawbacks to the phone!

I had a look at HTC Touch,p3400 and Asus P320 … They are in the range of 10K-14K, but the only problem is none of them have 3G .. and which one is a good deal asus p320 at 12,500 or Touch at 14,000..with both giving the same facilities..infact Asus giving a inbuilt GPS system!

@Ace: As you know there is no 3g launch in india it maybe 2g so if you want to use 3g you have to wait some more time. And for the rest Asus is best as of now

Is it worth buying?

Narendra, you make some valid points but what you are missing is the big picture – its the worlds best and most innovative device in terms of usability and looks, I am yet to hear any of my friends and other owners crib about it, also, its so flashy, it makes all other phones look antiquated.
PS: I have both 2G and 3G and they both just rock at least here in US not sure how good the service in India is, but if you are in some metros you should be fine.

The data plan costs the same irrespective of the device.

Sharing mp3s and movies is illegal. In any case there are apps that enable your iPhone to be a wireless flash drive.

You want video calling but no data plan. What sense does that make?

There is a successful proof of concept for copy and paste. Besides, how many phones support this?

If windows mobile phones are tied to activesync, why can’t iPhone be tied to iTunes?

Granted the camera can be of better quality.

Why care about mms when u can send email?

By chaneling everything through iTunes, apple is ensuring integrity and security.

No doubt there is room for improvement, but tell me which phone has it all?

3.no message forwarding.
4.no sync with PC windows not even to MAC
5.pathetic camera

about symbian S60 OS,its open source and like anyother open it is taking time to evolve….so far the capability of a symbian OS exceeds anything available.

even a good for nothing smartphone N73 is 3g,and can do a lot many things which iphone can’t….if one is just going for touchscreen and perhaps for better quality sound …it might be justified but never @ a price point of 31 k !!!!!

well its a good phone, my friend owns it, but being a linux user, I would probably suffocate using that for more than a few hours.
Its funny how my friend complains when a cheap nokia/motorola phone does not have FM but he is fine with Apple Iphone. I read how somebody commented how copy paste was useless on phones, Guys please try an use a smartphone for a few weeks. Copy paste works and I use it everyday.
Yes Apple is a control freak, it always has been. its a business model that US lives on. It has worked for them. Indians have always loved choice, because choice lowers prices and don’t we love that!
Also I don’t why edge actually works faster on my Moto e6 than my friends iphone .Remember there is no 3g in india. It took months for US operators to lay down 3g towers, this is India. We might be talking years. Ofcourse the iphone safari is a much better browser but It still does not beat firefox on my 15” laptop.
I have a strong feeling the Iphone might not work in India, Its not the price, its Apple not knowing the Indian Market.

it has great features and the user interface, and very easy to use for voice, sms and internet. and
iphone has a great internet device to user experience for browsing, default youtube client on the home screen, apps store.and

also advantage to music experience with iconic iPod.

So, as a whole if somebody who is targeting for this budget, it does not seem high when you buy a product from Apple.

iPhone is the best thing to happen to mobile device. Full marks for apple for such an innovative product. About the list of features you are marking which iphone cant do… well, it surely does what it promises… and as many have pointed out, most of the ‘missing’ features are just upgradable software.
Coming to Indian scenario, the lack of 3g network and poor EDGE network, most people may not opt to browse net on iphone. Yes, they may do so with a wi-fi which is a good experience in iPhone. All said, the prices announced are ridiculous!!!! So, wait until the prices go down and get your iphone!! Its the best.

Thanx Mr Narendra for ur comments but you should not forget the fact that Iphone is not a business phone. It is a premium segment smart phone. If at all someone wants to use mms, camera or other things he or she should go for some other phone.
By the way u can transfer anything to your iphone from itunes, if u register in it (free if u select country as india). Come on man u are looking for a FM radio in iphone.
if u want internet switch to Iphone data plan from airtel (0 rental for 1 year and 500mb/month free)

As in the UK you can buy it on pay as you go for 350 pounds.

For some strange reason, the iphone is so popular despite the lack of features.
It is for sure the coolest looking phone, but discerning buyers should/would know better to go for features and usability as compared to the coolness quotient.

Except for the 3G issues in India and also the data pack…. its a gr8 phone to own.. I have been having the phone for more than 6 months(not in india btw) and have luved every moment of it !

this is one heck of a biased anti-iphone review…..come on, look at the new 3.0 firmware….cut, copy & paste with A2DP bluetooth transfer and all the bling features. (psst, when was the last time you used a phone’s bluetooth to trnasfer an >1MB file…bwahaha XD XD it’s more than 6 months for me )

Indivudual developers and apple’s own uber-fast dev team work around the clock fixing bugs and creating new apps.

apps even the full ones can be got for free (if only u know where to look on the world wide web )

and I was i think the 5 person to get an ipod touch in the country where i live, Oman…and i feel the keyboard and prediction engine are very superior in quality…

lol u r surely not up to date with tech……iphone and even ipod touch can be jailbroken and used with any damn SIM in the world…even in nicargua, nigeria or even hawaii (as long there is a mobile service provider)

even the apple mobile platform is great for budding programmers and is very interesting. as an apple mobile developer myself, all the hardware features and other unique stuff such as the touch-based UI has a tremendous potential that is yet to be tapped by anyone in this world…

if iphone was crap, would apple have sold 1 million pieces of the new iPhone 3G S by the release weekend, which is about 4 days
